Sell more with the Know, Like, Trust principle

Business Operations, Marketing

When it comes to selling, there is one undeniable fact you should never forget: people buy from those they trust.

Think about your own buying habits for a moment. When you last needed a plumber, an accountant or a new pair of trainers, did you hand your money to a complete stranger on a whim? Probably not. You went with the name a friend recommended, the brand you had seen a dozen times before, or the business whose posts you had been quietly following for months. Your customers are exactly the same. Before they part with a penny, they need to feel confident they are making the right choice, and that confidence is built long before the sale itself.

This is where the Know, Like, Trust principle comes in. It is one of the oldest ideas in marketing, and it remains one of the most powerful, because it describes how real relationships work. Nobody goes from “never heard of you” to “take my money” in a single step. They move through three distinct stages, and your job as a business owner is to guide them gently through each one.

What Is the Know, Like, Trust Factor?

The Know, Like, Trust factor is the journey every customer takes before they buy. First, they become aware of you. Then, they warm to you. Finally, they trust you enough to spend money with you.

It sounds simple, and it is. But here is the important part: most businesses focus almost all of their marketing effort on the final stage, shouting “buy now” at people who barely know they exist. That is a bit like proposing marriage on a first date. The intention might be good, but the timing is all wrong.

When you understand the three stages, you can meet your audience where they actually are. You can create the right content, send the right messages and make the right offers at the right time. The result is marketing that feels natural rather than pushy, and customers who arrive at the point of purchase already convinced.

Let’s break each stage down.

Know: Your Audience Becomes Aware of You

The Know stage is exactly what it sounds like. Your audience is aware that your company exists. They may not know much about you yet, but you are on their radar.

This awareness can come from anywhere. They might have seen you pop up on social media, spotted an advert for your business, or heard your name mentioned in conversation. Word of mouth is especially powerful here, because a recommendation from a friend carries far more weight than any advert ever could. They might simply recognise your branding, your logo, your colours or your tone of voice, from having seen it consistently over time.

The key word at this stage is visibility. You cannot be known if you cannot be found. That means showing up regularly in the places your audience already spends their time, whether that is Google search results, their social media feeds or their local community. Consistency matters more than perfection here. A business that shows up every week with something useful will always become better known than one that appears once in a blue moon with something polished.

Like: Your Audience Starts to Relate to You

At the Like stage, something shifts. Your audience is not only aware of you now, but they also relate to you. They have moved from “I’ve heard of them” to “I quite like what they’re about.”

You will notice the signs. Your audience might start to interact with you more on social media. They will begin engaging with and sharing your posts, or reaching out to ask you questions. They will be eager to learn more about you, clicking through to your website, reading your blog posts and perhaps signing up to your mailing list.

What creates this shift? Personality and value. People warm to businesses that feel human, that share helpful advice without asking for anything in return, and that let a bit of character shine through. This is why generic, corporate content so often falls flat. Nobody relates to a faceless brand. They relate to the people behind it, the values it stands for and the way it makes them feel.

If the Know stage is about being visible, the Like stage is about being relatable. Show your workings. Share your opinions. Celebrate your customers. Let people see who you really are.

Trust: Your Audience Believes in You

Trust is where everything comes together. At this stage, your values align with theirs. They know how you can help them, and they feel certain they are in the right place.

And here is the wonderful thing: when a customer trusts you, they are ready to buy from you. There is no need for hard selling or pressure tactics, because the decision has already been made in their mind. All you need to do is make it easy for them to say yes.

But the benefits of trust go far beyond the first sale. When your customers trust you:

  • They will be far more inclined to recommend you to others, becoming a source of new business in their own right
  • They will be loyal fans, sticking with you even when a competitor offers something cheaper
  • They will be the first to engage with and share your content, amplifying your reach for free
  • They won’t hesitate to purchase from you repeatedly, turning a one-off sale into a lasting relationship

Trust is earned through proof and consistency. Testimonials, reviews, case studies and guarantees all help, but so does simply doing what you say you will do, time after time. Every promise kept is a deposit in the trust bank.

Bringing It All Together

When a customer trusts you, not only will they likely buy from you again, they will be far more inclined to recommend you to others. And remember, it’s cheaper to sell again to someone who has purchased from you before than to attract and convert a brand new lead. Nurturing the relationships you already have is one of the smartest investments your business can make.

So take a moment to look at your own marketing through this lens. Are you helping people get to know you, giving them reasons to like you, and earning their trust? Or are you skipping straight to the sale? A small shift in approach can make a remarkable difference to your results.
